Hi All, I am curious, the 2x2 coin flips that have that mylar film over the hole are they PVC free or will the material in the mylar ruin the coin over time? If so what can I use that is inexpensive to put my current and future coins in? Thank you John
I use 2x2 flips and then put them in my album. ANy other 2x2 flips without pvc is the way to go. SAFlips are good too but more expensive.
The film is safe. Most of the problems come from the cardboard dust which can absorb water vapor ( as they are not water tight). If you use staples, use stainless steel staples as the regular ones can rust over time and begin corrosion on the part of the coin closest to the tines. Obviously, probably the most frequent damage is from the bent staple ends. A flattening stapler is preferred, but carelessness and tight packing can cause scratches. If adhesive tape is used to seal the edges, archival tape should be used. With careful selection as to quality and care, they are satisfactory , but most people just look for the cheapest way and may suffer from it. IMO. Jim
Yes, if you're going the "stapler route", you'd want a flat-cinch stapler. You can find them at most office supply stores like Office Max. Chris
Thats sound great and a relief all at once. I was just about to buy 150 various size flips from an online supplier when I remembered a post I read about PVC in plastic coin holders or such and how it can ruin coins over time. Thanks again.
