A lot of steel cents were replated with tin or solder which is a lot more reflective than the original Zinc coating. Plating steel with Zinc is a very toxic process, which is why alterative processes that have similar results are used. The original zinc coating will not show on the edge of the coin. On some original coins the "cut and shear" edge can still be seen, due to the hardness of the steel against the rollers of the Upset Mill, and the collar die, this feature does not always get struck out/off the coins edge.
