For the past fifteen years, I have been finishing the 20th century set started by my Grandfather. For the past three years I have been stuck one dollar, or four quarters to be exact, away from completion. The quarters were the 1901-S and the 1913-S Barber quarters and the 1916 and 1917/8 Standing Liberty quarters. I found a nice 1901-S late last year leaving me with only one left. The 1913-S has been on my mind for a while now, but I could never find an example that I liked for the money. Today, was the day. A friend called me and told me that he knew of one for sale. Here it is, the coin that has had me searching for the last year. I guess now I have to work on the 19th century set.
Greg (gbroke) is going to image some of my proof sets soon, but the few images that I had of my business strikes died with my computer last week. Next time that I go to my SDB, I'll snap a few.
Holy Cow!!! Is the set for all the denominations or limited to quarters? Either way, it is a true moose of an accomplishment.:hail:
Thanks Tom. The set is cent through dollar and a type set of gold. I would really like to complete a set of gold, but every set has a real monster in it. Really, I would love a proof type set of gold, by my wallet has its limitations. I'm hoping to go for a few pieces when the ANA show gets to New Orleans next year.
amazing. that is such a monumental task. good luck with the proof nickles, i know that set is really nice. Congratulations!
Wow man, just wow. The only set I've ever been able to complete is the other day when I got bored after roll searching quarters and decided to complete a set of state quarters (low attention span). NICE!!!
Well with three generations doing the bulk of the work, I had a good leg up. It took me fifteen years to do little more than twenty percent of the collection. I feel great having completed such a collection, but I feel for my son who will have the challenge of completing the ninteenth century set when ever I am useless.
Finished the 20th Century? Are you saying you have every coin from every series for the 20th century? I can't wrap my head around that! That is impressive.
The majority of the set was picked out of circulation, but was upgraded over the years. I would say that the average grade would be in the XF-45 to AU-50 range for the years 1900 to 1945. 1946 to 2000 are all MS-63 or better.
Holy smokes. Now when my wife says I have too many coins, I'll just say: "At least I'm not like Kirkuleez!" That should smooth things over.
I'm no Eliasberg, but I may have too many coins. The shame is that ever since Katrina, the coins aren't in my home safe anymore. I do go visit them every weekend though.
The 1913 was a proof issue and likely done after hours by a mint employee. I dont consider it to be a regular mint issue. I did deliver the famous hawaii five o specimen to a collector about ten years ago.
