Just found this quarter. Almost the entire mother fruit bat’s face is obscured by a large die chip. Very interesting.
It looks too big to be a die chip in my opinion. Possible strike through?? Calling on error collectors.
That’s not a die chip. Die chips are raised. That is definitely a strike through. It’s called the Blind Bat. Here’s mine,
The issue in question is definitely a Strike Through error. It was not caused by extreme heat and not PMD.
Die chips, die breaks and Cuds occur when a piece of the die breaks and falls off when it is overused. When the Die strikes the blank planchet the metal from the planchet flows into the void so it will be raised on the coin. It's cool that you found another example of a strike through just like the one @Collecting Nut found several weeks ago.
You’re asking if I have ever seen a blind mouse? Yes, I have, actually it was Three Blind Mice. No wait, that’s a nursery rhyme. I guess not. LOL
Just a tip, when examining such abnormal surfaces, use a soft item, like a wooden tooth pick, to determine if the area is raised, or incused. Helps a lot, as photos are sometimes deceptive. Incused, or lower, would indicate something pressed into the surface, while raise, something added, so you can better evaluate it.
