Is this error from a die scratch? I found several in a box of uncirculated nickels. Are they even worth hanging on to? Thanks!
I found over a dozen with the exact same mark through "of America." It is not a scratch on the coin itself, but rather raised.
looks like a die gouge to me. and IF you have found a dozen EXACTLY like it, then absolutely it would be a die gouge. it's not as deep as the lettering and it looks raised from the picture and it doesn't interrupt it as damage on a coin would. Die scratch/gouge in my opinion, unless it's not raised of course.
It looks like a minor die gouge. Cool that you found multiple examples. They probably have minimal if any additional value, but I would put them in a 2x2 if I found them @potty dollar 1878 What characteristics do you see that led you to believe it's damage?
I guess i was thinking the opposite its a gouge but i thought the damaged type like someone got bored and decided to have some fun and did it in the same spot for multiple coins
Thanks y'all! I appreciate you taking the time to comment. I prefer coin roll hunting circulated coins, but since I got stuck with these I figured I would just look them over real good. This was the only unusual thing I saw. Again, Thanks!
Yes to a die gouge. This is more about sloppy workmanship than it is about it being an error. They can be interesting though and I would keep them.
Looks like a die gouge to me, add in that you found a number of them basically cements it. Not really and extra premium for them but worth keeping.
