Since their release in May, the 2019 Lincoln W ''Unc'' cents graded MS 70 are selling well above 4 figures. Is this a manic bubble that will soon pop after the initial hype wears off, or is it a good long term investment for one of the most popular collected series of coins? One dealer told me the NGC pop of this MS70 cent is around 35! Can anyone confirm this stat? Are these the first and last ''W'' minted cents, or is the mint planning for more in subsequent years? I appreciate your thoughts...
Except for the 2009 series of Lincolns, I stopped collecting LMC in 1995 , so I may be an outlier. I do not intend to chase after new issues that may or may not maintain such a value over time. I certainly would not pay 4 figures when I could get a classic coin such as a 1972/72 DDO-1 or 1955/55 in lower grades for similar amount. If the mint sees them as valuable, they may release large numbers as a later 'special deal'. but it doesn't really matter to me. It is interesting in how many dealers have rolls for sale ungraded. Every one has to make their own financial decision. Jim
The US Mint made 3 different finish 2019 W Lincoln cents. Proof, Reverse Proof, and Uncirculated. IMO after the hype settles down the prices will come down. An example is the 1996 W Roosevelt dime. I totally agree with @desertgem. I'd rather spend the money on the 55 or 72 DDO.
I can't see these 2019 W's retaining these lofty prices either. I respect both alternate coins @desertgem and @thomas mozzillo selected in lieu of the '19, but I'd put the money into a 1909-S VDB. I've got an affection for that coin in a better than common grade.
Do you think the mint would decide to continue future W ''pennies'' based on prices being paid for the present ones in secondary markets? It seemed these ''bonus'' coins where an afterthought the way they were packaged with their respective clad/silver sets.
If there's an increase in sales of 2019 proof and mint sets vs 2018 then my guess would be that they'd continue to throw in a W cent in 2020.
Fair enough, but the 'famous one' has a sex appeal that I'm in love with. Yeah, I said it. Just don't tell Mrs. Swimmer
You are all correct regarding these Lincoln cents that the hype is well beyond what should be or even at all. It appears the money grabbers hype the selling of this coin for profit and then, as predicted, the bottom drops out. This Lincoln cent is No different because the sets that are including this great prize (and it is unique, don't get me wrong) are the Proof, Silver Proof and Mint sets of which ALL have "unlimited" mintages. This means the sales of these sets will be in direct correlation to the amount of "W" Lincoln cents being issues too so, count on millions. If this holds true, and I am confident it will, these "W" Lincolns will be collector's items but, not worth more than $1. Sorry folks.
Think about it. Bet its a first strike. Early release. Yadda yadda. New fad. Does it have those blotches at 2 and 10. And did you send i just one or 50 roll from that tv show. They all got to grade ms 70 right.
It's like the W quarters. The mint drew a map in every state the time and date there dumping them. You think my grandbabies are going to stand in line with thousands of dollars to but boxes. This country is a greed country. Theres a claw or hock in everything
