I get so confused on these things but because this looked odd to me, I have to ask. I see doubling on the Liberty and date or is it die deterioration or mechanical doubling? I looked on copper coins but I can’t tell!

Simple.. Flat and Shelflike does not make it a Doubled Die variety.

    That's die deterioration doubling.
    Unfortunately, worthless doubling.

I think some of it is a form of plating split-doubling or whatever you call it. Also keep in mind that the mint had been using single-press hubbing for 30+ years by this point. While there is still doubling found from the die/hub chattering when it presses the die, it's usually found in the center of the coins.

Mimi…as noted, this is from a worn, overused die. The LIBERTY effect seems to me to be the slight wear on the top of the letters that is mimicking doubling to the eye. Also, sometimes light reflection using scopes will mimic doubling, especially on the ends of letters and numerals. When I run across this, I re- orient the coin position and use a different light source to illuminate the area to confirm. Usually it is light reflection that ends up being the culprit.
