Got a box of halves to fill up my Kennedy coin books I just got and found $62 of 2018 D halves.
Did someone just dump a ton into circulation or does the mint dump what did sell into circulation?

    What makes them NIFC?

Could be someone bought a bag of 200, kept the gems, and turned the rest loose.

The mint claims they melt the unsold ones.

What Lake Effect said. A collector will buy a bag at a small premium from the mint.
Try and get a few high grade coins (MS-69? w/e) and then dump the rest at face value.
While technically they are low mintage, the market is soft for these. Dealers don't really want them.
Oh, you could hold them for 20 years and make a profit on it I guess.

Ill keep a couple for my personal collection but I dont intend on keeping them. Just the most I've ever found in a single box.

Not sure if it's the reason you're finding them, but there was a spike in the number of coins minted in 2018 - about 10,000,000 between P & D, as opposed to 3-4 million total in recent years.

I agree that I would go through them with my loupe and keep the 2 in the best condition.

Yes, keep the best of the best ones for your personal collection. If you're like me that's at least 15 set aside for Dansco albums for the kids, and future albums for the grandkids. Any extra Unc coins I can usually sell a roll or two to my local coin dealer for a slight premium (~$18 per roll of 20).

If you can sell them for $18 a roll that's a good deal right there.
Immediate return, and you keep a few nice ones for free.

Do you not know that is slang for Not Intended/Issued For Circulation or are you trolling? 10 Mil is an awful lot for NIFC though....

I should check with my local places and see if I can unload some of mine!

Most of the NIFCs are in the 3M range. I didn't realize they produced so many. (10M).

The amount of them had me wondering if they were trying to slip half dollars back into circulation. I just dont see what the point is. Someone had to have bought them all from the mint and for whatever reason dumped them into circulation. But why? Just sounds like a waste of money to buy them just to release them.

I found a handful of 2018 P & D mints also. And the answer to your question is, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
