    Hi guys,

I have this 2017 P Washington Quarter and would see that a good portion of the letters are missing on the obverse. I am assuming that this is a Strike Thru Grease Error.

If so, my question is, how often does this type of error occur on newer quarters? I normally see Strike Thru's often on State Quarters. 2017 Washington Quarter (Obverse2).jpg

It's a cool find but it's pretty common.

Coins missing letters or numbers as the result of a grease-filled die are as common as grains of sand on a beach.

All coins were new when they were first struck ;)
It can occur on any series.

Just curious and no big deal, but actually thought the name/reference, Washington Quarter, officially ended with the 1998 issue...all future issues including the 2021 were officially called 'State' quarters, 'ATB' quarters, 'National Park' quarters and so-on, of whatever they were commemorating. Asking because this is the first time, with this 2017 Ellis Is/NJ quarter, that I've heard/seen a reference to "Washington Quarter" in a long time, not of the 1932-1998 variety. Yes, I know...I don't get out/around all that much, nor as current with official jargon.:pompous:

This is interesting what you have written about. I only called the quarter a "Washington Quarter" because Washington's face is on it. Not sure what the proper name of this quarter is.

Calling them Washington Quarters is just fine Rosalita. Washington's bust has been on the obverse since 1932 so calling them anything else is just nit picking.

Yes to struck through grease but they are very common.

Many of us have gotten used to the variables in terminology, especially when it comes to the quarter programs over the last 20+ years. Some people call the ATB quarters by the name of the state where the national monument or park is located. Using "Washington quarter" as an identifier still gets the point across. It definitely won't be confused with a Kennedy!:);):woot::rolleyes:

Your quarter is interesting in that it seems to have affected the areas around the letters struck. I want to say that a "blob" of debris or grease, covered that area, allowing some letters to be struck and others not. I'd hang on to it as a good example of what can happen. Thanks for sharing it.

Indeed your reference is fine...meant nothing of it whatsoever, not nit picking, etc., and I was totally misunderstood by another member. I simply hadn't heard/seen newer quarters referenced that way for so long that I got to wondering if, in official circles, etc., the names they seem to go by (state, National Parks, etc) are official names for the various quarter's series that came after the original Washington Quarter series ended in 1998. That's all...and thanks for your reply.

Sorry Mac. I was not pinpointing you, it was just a general reply.
