hello again I found this nice RIAZD H just in front of the ponytail of Washington at first I thought I had something but noticed other marking of the Revers of the coin just past the ponytail and before the "igwt" you can see other marking on Wash' neck just under his ear kinda looks like a box there are also marking's on his chin and mouth
Looks like clashed dies to me. (don't know where that so-called 'H' comes from, but probably from the building on the reverse)
@Fred Weinberg yes it's the bridge of the Reverse of the coin but look's like an H on the Obverse of the coin
I'm probably wrong but isn't a clashed Die issue only on the field and not on the design. Or can occur anywhere? I hope you understand my question.
I am not sure I could answer! @Fred Weinberg am i right? but my understanding is they can be anywhere
Not sure if it's normal but I have found cents with the memorial on Lincoln's neck at the edges, but not across the entire bust.
They're usually in the fields, right, but there are numerous examples of all denominations where they run across the design elements also.
Look at the windows. above a few of them is a smaller window....then look at the "H"....Im thinking its a window and you can actually see part of the window above it in washingtons hair. Fun, like wheres waldo.
I have a question. Would a clash like this be replicated in other coins or is this coin a unique one of a kind in existence?
That depends on if the the die worker found the clash and then polish to die to erase the clash could be a dozen or more
Not likely to be just one. Remember, this is a Philly coin and they are known to use their dies to death. All depends on QC making timely inspections. These are high speed presses so there could be many more before this was discovered and the die sent back for re-tooling. Although this is a nice clash, unless it were a major "event" that shut down the press, it would have kept producing coins until this was found in a check.
So I am trying to imagine a "die clash" in action. 2 dies smashing into each other with no planchet in between. The highest points on each die would connect right? In return, the next planchet would show the "damage" to the dies and most likely be on the lowest parts of the coin? My stupid mechanical brain is telling me if everything is "perfect" a clash will always be in the same spot on any given coin? So on the Raizacs coin, even if the damaged die was noticed and a new set used...if those dies came together they would damage each other at the same place as the last? But I know thats not true because there are clashes in different spots for the same coin. I know I am over thinking it and it probably doesnt matter. A clash is a clash is a clash.
