I just found this 2017 P with a crack running across the head and down the face.

Looks nothing like the 2 2015 pennies, split die crack across the obverse that I have? Better pics.please.

I don't think it is supposed to look like yours.

Yes I see it. Not sure if it's a crack or lamination issue. Still a nice find and a keeper!

Its a plated coin so it's Not a delamination issue. Just a plain die crack.

Maybe send it to be graded? The Pros can better answer just what is up with the 2017-P mint penny that you have?

@Inspector43 …I recently went through 2 rolls of 2017-P cents. My goal was to remove any that had evidence of die deterioration, split-plating, wear or damage. I found 15 that met this criteria. Another 60 were borderline with die cracks on the forehead and hair as well as on the shield on the reverse above PLU/PLURIBUS. That left only 25 coins that had relatively no mistakes. I only kept these because they were the first cent (and only, so far) to be minted with a “P” mint mark. And because my wife gifted them to me.

I came to this conclusion about 2 years ago: It is difficult to find Zincolns that have no problems, almost all of them have die cracks, die deterioration and surface plating issues.

YOUR COIN appears to be a plating issue, and I see the die crack on the forehead.

@Spark1951 I agree 100% with your description of the current US One Cent piece. They are very ugly and don't hold up well at all. When looking at them I too try to find problem free examples. Thanks for the input.

It goes down the forehead to the nose. I considered the forehead part of the face.

As do I. And, to clarify, I was talking business strikes from pocket change and from wrapped rolls, not mint sets or proofs.

It will never be worth more than a penny, so, I wouldn't even consider sending it to be graded. The good folks here on CT are well qualified enough to evaluate something like this. I take all feedback and the majority rules. Plus, it doesn't matter, I post only to give others a look and information that they may or may not need or use.

This new cent has given a lot of traditional collectors much grief. The mint is trying to make all their coins shinney and mirror like. It seems that the new breed of collectors wants the shinney and mirror like stuff. The new coating process leaves a lot to be desired. It is difficult to maintain a nice finish. Here is a 2019 W Proof with imbedded fibers and faded finish. I have 3 of them and they are ugly.

I understand. I got 2 rolls only to use in the sets I made for the grandchildren. It was difficult to find nice pieces to include.
