I’ve been going through my safe and trying to organize my coins so I could free up some space and I came across this coin that I got from my parents when they went to Canada back in 2016. Normally I tell my parents to please NOT buy me coins as gifts because they don’t know what I like and what certain coins are worth and I don’t want them to get ripped off and buy something gimmicky for like 5x what it’s worth.. For example: A PCGS MS70 American Silver Eagle (non proof) for $79.99. ..But this coin is one I actually really like and I am glad they bought for me as a gift. They bought it from a post office in Canada too so I didn’t have to worry about the gimmicky price tags since usually the governments of all countries sell their own Mint products for the same price regardless of where it’s purchased. Anyway according to the COA that came with the coin it has a mintage of 18,888 (which is a really weird number) and I came across it while cleaning & organizing my safe so I thought I’d share it with you all. Who else loves monkeys?? ^_^ Note: the specks and blemishes are on the plastic capsule not the coin.
I’m actually not sure. I checked the COA and (unlike the US Mint does) the Royal Mint didn’t put any sort of weight on it or anywhere that I can find. The only way for me to find out would be to weigh it and see if it’s 31.1 grams but I’m hesitant to do that since I hate taking proof coins out of capsules due to how easy they get blemished. Based on the size and thickness of it though I believe it is 1 troy oz since it’s very close to the size of an American Silver Eagle.
I am a little confused. The only Canadian 2016 silver proof $15 with a mintage of 18,888 that I have been able to find is a scalloped coin https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces80939.html
It’s too new. I’ve run into this before. NGC uses Numismaster for their World Coin Guide, so it is essentially the same thing, and Numismaster data used by NGC cuts off at 2015 for anything Canadian. They just can’t get anything newer from them at this time. Eventually it will all get updated…Spark
@expat I think you were fortunate to find the scalloped proof, Numismaster must be doing some new entry work presently…Spark
Or go to the source https://www.mint.ca/store/coins/1-oz.-fine-silver-coin-–-year-of-the-monkey-2016-prod2470058
Here's a link to the whole series but the OP's coin is the silver version I linked above. https://www.mint.ca/store/search/se...RGS=/store/common/header_flash.jsp.formSearch
My bad…the color is gold, yes, COA= SILVER…no wonder I’m chasing my tail. Really bad picture of a silver coin.
Yes, Kudos to @LakeEffect …all my searching found nada listed at mint.ca for the (finally!) proper parameters. Your link is the best found…Spark
I went back to mint.ca, searched for “2016 Year of the monkey” and the result was that found by @LakeEffect . I guess searching for “monkey and peach” wasn’t good enough…but it sure made a monkey out of me!…Spark Btw, I absolutely love this coin. @Gam3rBlake
I don't know if many of you collect Canadian coins. I don't collect them as much as I do U.S. coins, but I have a bunch of Canadian coins that were given to me. (Thank you) I have collected a few from their mint. I have been looking for a gold coin that I would like and afford. It doesn't look like they produce as many "special" gold coins as the U.S. Mint does, but I bought some beautiful silver coins from the mint. Every time I find a Canadian gold coin I like, they are sold out.
If you are buying RCM special silver coins, buy them on the secondary market. 3-5 years after release, the majority of the RCM granny-bait sells for about 70% of the issue price. Major dealers here get a huge mint discount for buying the RCM stuff and the vast majority lose money quite quickly and the dealers then unload them. A few will appreciate nicely, but most don't.
I order from a dealer in Canada that usually runs a sale each month and find some RCM products at great prices. This along with the fact that I also get a good exchange rate from Canadian to US dollars, I often pick up a few.
