The first one has a really nice eagle on the reverse. He looks angry! Bruttium, Bretti 214-211 BC, 21mm, 8.40g: Obv: Head of Zeus right Rev: Eagle standing left on a thunderbolt, crescent above "BRET-TIWN" Caduceus in left field.. HN Italy 1978. And, although I have sworn off itty-bitty coins, I fel for this one! Look at the mug on the obverse! And you rarely see an owl with a little T-Rex arm holding a lizard. This one get's my "Creepiest Coin of 2016" award. Sicily, Kamarina 420-405 BC AE Tetras 2.85 grms, 14mm O: Facing Gorgoneion R: Owl w lizard W-J 194, CNS 20 Please post anything your heart desires but if I have to be more specific I'll go with "MG bronze" or "creepy coins" you bought in 2016.
Ooooh, very nice Kamarina! Great gorgon, well-centered, clear lizard... winner! I want the facing gorgon type to go with my other two. I think the owl's little T-Rex arm is really one of the hind legs of the lizard. The owl is holding the lizard with his right leg. I prefer the T-Rex interpretation though My two (man... your new Kamarina would look great with mine ) SICILY, Kamarina 420-405 BCE AE tetras, 3.11 gm Obv: Head of Athena right, wearing winged Phrygian helmet; dotted border Rev: KAMA (legend from top to bottom), with owl standing left, lizard in talons; three dots in exergue Ref: Westermark / Jenkins 202, SNG ANS -., Calciati III No. 39 SICILY, Kamarina 420-405 BCE AE tetras, 3.34 gm Obv: Large head of Athena left, wearing crested helmet with wings Rev: Owl standing left, with lizard in talon; KAMA (retrograde) upward in right field; three dots in exergue Ref: Westermark / Jenkins 198 (see FIG. WOW!! Three fantastic 'tetras' !!! Congrats JB and TIF !!! My 'creepiest' still has to be this RR denarius (Mars in Hades???):
My god, man! That's a Freddie Kruger denarius! You win the "2016 Creepy Coin Award". And the reverse "bone"? WOW! I am impresed!!
GORGEOUS pickups, VERY nice @JBGood ! I have a Kamarinas, but it is an Onkia: SICILY Kamarina Æ Onkia 13mm 1.5g 420-405 BC Gorgoneion tongue - KAMA owl r lizard in claw pellet in ex SNG München 411 Ex: @John Anthony , so it is the BEST ONKIA he has ever seen!
As a matter of fact, yes! The smaller they get the rougher, generally speaking. The larger coins are readily found in better grades. Onkias not so much.
