Haven't seen any photos of an actual side by side comparison so here it is out of the plastic. 2016 gold merc next to a gold plated real merc for size comparison. The edge on the 2016 is thicker. I just got mine today. Got 5 perfect ones. Wasn't disappointed in the least. I love the satin finish look.
