Hey guys. Another find from last night. I noticed a few scratches on the shield that run through EPU, yet the letters are not affected by it at all. I assume this is damage that existed on the planchet prior to striking. I read on error-ref that this can be before or after plating on zincolns. Based on how deep the gouge is my presumption would be prior to plating because I think it would break through the copper and reveal the zinc. Is all of this correct or am I just spending too much time on simple PMD.

    Thanks much,

    Soren.

The way the marks are lit they appear to be incuse which would undicate some kind of contact mark. The don't disturb the letters because they too are incuse and the contact mark isn't as deep as the letters.

Oh really that’s interesting— I forgot on shield cents the EPU was incuse. Do you think this could be pre-strike or post-strike? My entire reasoning was based upon my error of thinking EPU was in relief.
