i have never found an OBV rim cud before...usually just the bigger ones on the rev of 2005 & 2006 state quarters. so this could be a first for me. there is no impact point on the side of the coin so I don't think it's pmd. opinions appreciated.
Interesting.. My first thought was some kind of Rim Burr. But if not then I say the beginnings of a Cud... or a Flawed Planchet
Imagine something striking the edge of the collar, or maybe just a small catastrophic failure, knocking a small piece off of the collar at a place where metal from the strike can then flow into the void thus formed. As much of that specific area on the coin is formed by the collar as the die.
how do you tell the difference between the 2? also it looks like there is a crack that goes to the left of said location in the 4th pic? if a crack would matter at all.
Mostly by being experienced enough to have seen a few of these before, like Mike Diamond. Those of us, like me, who haven't, just have to theorize. Point being, the die will have a channel there - much like an o-ring cutout - designed to help form the rim. It's quite possible - to someone like me, who doesn't know exactly how much die and collar each do to create the rim for this specific issue - that the die is the only culprit here. What experience I *do* have makes me lean towards blaming the collar.
