There are many, many ways that damage like this could happen while in circulation. It looks like there is a flat mark on the obverse (near the chin) that corresponds to the indentation on the reverse. If this had happened at the Mint from, say a strikethrough, there would be no tell-tale sign on the obverse. Chris
