Got this today in pocket change. The picture shown is of depression under the water pump. Can't get one of the depression above the roof on the right side. Is this a Variety or an error? Common or not? Looking to learn-- Thanks!!
not sure, looking for insite---they are depressions The 15 2009 DC quarters I sent in looked the same-so who knows research is needed, I guess
I've seen similar depressions on CA SQ's that I got from Mint bags. One such depression appeared on the brim of John Muir's hat. As I continued to search the bag, I finally came across one quarter that explained it all. It was a full-blown die break on the brim in the very same place. I came to the conclusion that the slight depression was a die crack forming in the substrate. The gap caused by the subsurface crack allowed the depression to form on the surface during striking. Eventually, the die metal gave way forming the die break. Chris
I have a number of unopened D rolls from the ceremony on Feb 10. All end coins show the depression from the top of the water pump, and surrounding the entire window, to the top of the window. I do not see the depression to the right of the roof.
I have a celestron scope. have tons of problems getting good shots of silver coins. The glare from the scope kills pictures. On cents great pics. Don't have the space for a Hubble(joke). Thanks..many hours finding the right angle
Yeah those LED lights are a bummer. I used a ring insert to try to cover the lights and used exterior lighting. I'm not happy yet with the results of my Celestron. Your close ups look so much better than anything I have ever achived. Do you know the model number ?
The letters on Homestead is machine doubling. The marks under the Buck and pump look like something was struck into the coin. I see this a lot on proof coins and BU/circulated coins. So it could be a struck through. A clash in that area would probably not make those marks. I see no other evidence for a clash. So I feel a clash is probably not the cause. http://www.coinworld.com/insights/c...015-quarter-dollar-doubled-die-varieties.html
Now hold the phone! That is one awesome picture!!!! How in the heck??? I want one. I want one... Thanks for the info, still looking for that error coin...
The image is made with two images of a coin and rotated to the position they could be in during the strike. (IE flipped horizontal and rotated 180 degrees for U.S. coins) I make these all the time with Photoshop. Now I'm realizing can rotate when a clash happens. So they rotation can be slightly different on some clashes. If is very common to find the ATB quarter with the machine doubling on the incuse devices. Out of 25 I check from circulation, about 1/2 had that type of doubling on them.
Right on...off to the casino with those... wait I listed one on eBay to just see if I could sell a quarter for more than face....
Normally we would think doubled die, but because the devices are incuse, (raised on the die) die movment makes them look like a doubled die, but are just machine doubling.
