I see what you mean, but that's not an error, it's just the way it looks from the way the metal formed and the strike hit. Here's the best little photo that helps me determine what is actually a doubled die vs machine doubling or ghost doubling (where there's some sort of shadow that looks like the number or letter).

Thanks. Does this add to its value or is it just a neat coin? think I'm keeping it either way.

I'd say keep it for now (I kept mine when I initially started collecting errors until I started finding others more intriguing).

It might help to keep as an example of what is not a doubled die for future reference until you get a firm hold on possible errors.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

This is an artifact known as "die deterioration doubling." It is extremely common, and happens when the gets old and fatigued, after striking many coins. There is no premium for this.

Good eye Matt! I think we both have the right idea....or trying to head in the right direction.

    Here's my sample:

    You need to show pictures.
I suggest you start your own thread over at the Error Coins forum.
    Most likely it was altered.
    Coins are struck not printed.

    Welcome to the neighborhood, Nels!

You should do as Mr. P. suggested, and be sure to include photos of both sides of the coin by using the "Upload a File" at the bottom before you post your reply. ~ Chris
