New to coin collecting but find it fascinating. Can anyone tell me if this is an error coin? It looks like an S is backward near the date (it may be from the other side). On the reverse it looks like part of Liberty is on the shield. What is it all over? Thanks for any advice. Linda
Well, I might would, at first glance agree with you except forensically not the case. There are impressions from the opposite sides...not sure how my dryer would do that....but it has done strange things before. I had a terrible time uploading photos, maybe I didn't get the best ones on. Some of the areas appear to be made from the inside out if that makes sense.
That is one seriously nasty corroded cent. Even if it were an error (which I do not see any sign of it being), it would still be worthless in that condition. Well, OK, maybe not worthless. It is worth one cent if you can spend it without someone saying, "eww, I don't want that one!" and throwing it back at you. Best use for that one would be in a wishing well. Just toss 'er in the well and wish for a better find. (Hey, it could work...)
Do all coin collectors have that narcissistic desire to degrade anyone with a question. Why the undertone? Just an honest question. I've not made a comment on here since January when I signed up...but I have watched other newcomers and others ask their question and it's like a piranha feast....you all jump like you've found a new toy. Does it not occur to you that perhaps someone THOUGHT they valued your opinion, only to find out that you're not only here to discourage but to degrade. That's what I've seen. So I decided I would give it a whirl and sure enough, you never fail to disappoint. If I get kicked off for saying these truths to you, then I can be sure that only the piranha can stay on this site.
You asked. And I wasn't degrading you or your opinion. Just stating the facts (if admittedly rather bluntly and with a touch of humor), that the coin is junk. Sorry. You got the unvarnished truth about it, is all. I'm sorry if that deflated your dreams. Really, it was not intended as any personal affront to you. If you're sincerely here to learn, I hope you will understand that. If not, there is nothing I can do except say sorry for your hurt feelings, and you may think whatever you like about your coins. Yours is the only opinion that counts there, anyway. But don't go asking for people's opinions and then get offended when they're given. You'll have a very unhappy experience on Internet forums if that's the case.
No...I AM here to learn. I literally know hardly anything about these coins but have a desire to learn. I was pretty sure a penny wasn't going to make me rich. just don't know how these errors occurred, etc. and yes....You were degrading. I have about 700 coins that I inherited that I know nothing about....this penny I just found in my change. I am tough so no, my feelings aren't hurt, I'm just calling it the way I see it and to be honest, your comments do not encourage anything positive...it's like, You Tarzan, Me Jane or something lol....ya'll crack me up with this stuff. EVERY Single time, someone new asks about a coin,,,,ya'll pounce. It's like little coin syndrome or something. Sorry.
Hi, Linda! I can see that you have only been a member for a few months, and you haven't posted too much. I'm not trying to offend you, but when you've been on these forums for as long as some of us, you will see many, many, many threads about coins that, to the newcomer, may seem like unusual errors even though they are not. So, in order to overcome the repetitive nature of some of the responses you read, the members often make light of such coins. It is not intended to be a slight despite the fact that we often encounter some newcomers who have "thin skin" and are offended easily. We can't help the fact that threads like yours occur over and over and over and over, ad infinitum. I think that when you've learned more about this fun hobby and participated more in similar threads, you will begin to understand why some people react the way they do. You really need to shed your thin skin for a thicker one. Chris
This. As Chris mentioned, if you stay here for any amount of time, and learn more about numismatics, you will realize the "ad infinitum" nature of posts (and coins) like yours that we see here, all the time... over and over and over. Most folks aren't offended when they're truthfully told their coins are, well... extremely common, or even extremely junky. I made some jokes about this that obviously you took the wrong way, and I'm sorry if they ruffled your feathers. I try to get along with everyone here. I have been a collector for 41 years. If that makes me Tarzan and you Jane, well ... I certainly wasn't thinking about it that way. That's your metaphor, not mine.
Hey, Tarzan! Don't forget to bring home a bunch of bananas. The monkeys are looking forward to banana splits on Sunday.
If that's your approach, then why comment at all? I'll get the same picture and promise I won't say....why is no one responding. It's a little egotistical of you to take this approach. Any whoooooo.....I will go back in to my cacoon.
@Linda Shierling - If you'll dry your tears and stop calling me Tarzan, I'll make it up to you, and send you something pretty in the mail, and maybe a piece of silver, too. Call it a modest peace offering. Of course I would need you to PM your address for that, which if you did not want to do, I would understand. OR you could accept my bribe peace offering and then throw it into a wishing well like I suggested you do with the corroded cent above, and you could then use your wish to make me break out in hives or grow warts all over my face or whatever. Now that would be poetic justice, wouldn't it? (Don't bother wishing for me to become fat and ugly. You're too late there- that's already happened. LOL)
Linda, the coin has been through a lot in 3 years. I do not see an error, just post mint damage as stated. It is hard to state what caused all the damage from pictures. Keep looking and an error of some kind will surface eventually.
Wow, what's the world coming to. @lordmarcovan made someone angry. Never thought I'd see that. I've always considered you one of the very helpful members for answering newbie questions, with much more patience than a lot of us. Oh well, guess you can't please everyone
Hi lord....I thought you had already broke out in hives AND grown warts all over your face and your still fat and ugly. LOL LOL LOL
Hi Linda, we all have different personalities and different views. The way a conversation comes across in writing can be entirely different than if the same words were spoken. The best reaction is not to take what was said personally. Our opinions are only based on the information, data and photos provided. If you read what you can from this site, you will notice the same type of response from the same member time and time again. It doesn't mean they are rude, just different.
