Change from UDF yesterday. A lot going on obverse and reverse. Please help! Looks as though someone let their kid go to town with a bunch of cents and tried to make one but i have no clue.
It's real, just Zinc. They all look like this in time and who would create fake Cents? It cost more that a cent to make the real ones. Welcome to CT.
I saw your "Intro" thread @Wade Marmon . Welcome to the neighborhood! Apparently, you are new to numismatics, so the last thing you should be looking for is error coins until you understand how coins are made. Chris
For a Jarhead I learn quickly. Also collected comics and cards my whole life. For a short time my dad had a card shop in Urbana, OH.
Copper plated zinc cents corrode easily. Once the plating is breached, the zinc core can react very quickly with the environment. It is similar to scratching the paint on your car and having rust form on the metal
Well, thank you for your service to our country! Unfortunately, collecting coins is much more complicated than collecting comics & cards. Chris
The one thing most people tend to ignore is what money is and *isn't* used for. For instance, do you ever put change in your cup holder? What else do people put in cup holders? Have you ever, or ever heard of anyone spilling anything in their cupholders, even with coins in them? That spillage usally looks like stains and stuff on coins, and thus is "damage" or generically called "environmental damage". Ever found a coin in a parking lot .. all scratched up, etc etc? more damage. There are infinite ways a coin can get damaged, stained, etc etc and by comparison very limited ways a coin can be an error/variety. FWIW, It's actually kinda complex and requires some money to recreate dies and to make counterfeit coins. I don't see a kid doing it in their spare time .. except with maybe 3D printing.
