2014 Cent worn die? toned

    Found this today, and I have not seen any of the new shield cents exhibit this kind of flaw. What are your thoughts?

    I've never seen a shield cent with such a crappy surface plus the extra metal around the rim goes over the lettering so I'm thinking damage (if it was a die crack I don't think it would be that wide!)

    An acidic environment would explain the surface porosity, but not the extra metal near the rim. I wonder if maybe this is a laminated edge which got folded over by the strike? I don't really have the impression of die cracks or wear from the nature of the features seen here.

    I would think if it was PMD, zinc would have become exposed.

    Yeah, and it seems a tad thick for just the copper plating to have laminated. Interesting coin.

    Doesn't the first pic of the reverse show some zinc coming through? Or is that just some kind of crud?
