I found what i believe is an error on a 2014 arches qrtr. The strike appears to have been uneven causing significant wear on the obverse left side the L in liberty is barely visable and united is very faint whereas on the right side of the obverse shows no wear. Can anyone tell me if this is for sure an error. Any input would be appreciated because i know there are no known errors for this qrtr. Thanks
First, welcome to the neighborhood, Paul! It looks to me like it is the result of a partially grease-filled die.
Coins aren't stamped and thats has nothing to do with the minting process of coins at all and it looks like a Grease filled die but doesn't really add any premium your not going to get rich off it.
A build up of grease and debris slowly collects in some of the incuse areas of the die, eventually stopping the forming of the devices in those areas. Generally called a struck through grease/debris error, they are common and hold no real premium
Actually.. They are stamped Step 5: Striking Finally, the blanks go to the coining press. Here, they are stamped with the designs and inscriptions, which make them genuine United States coins. What they are not is.. printed
It's just a common worn die issue. It could occur on any denomination and any year. Nothing really major.
That means you could make an excellent professor someday. I think it's a pre-req, in fact. And welcome to CT @Paul Rendon! The guys around here are a bit abrupt sometimes, but they really are very helpful.
Ive learned that uneven weak strikes are hallmark for grease strikes. So is it worth keeping or should i just put it back in the sparklets bottle
Put it in a flip and label it. You can then use it for reference later if you come across something similar
You can save it until you find a better example if you wish. There are other coins that are the result of grease-filled dies that are far more dramatic than this one. For example, you might find one with the first "T" in TRUST completely missing....."IN GOD WE RUST" or one with part of the date missing....."199" or "200". These are fairly common and far more interesting. ~Chris
You talking about @potty dollar 1878 ? Don't mind that young fella. He's still learning. Lol. Welcome to the fracas.
Welcome Paul! Some members are very straight forward with answers but don't intend to be rude. Trust me, I've experienced a lot worse. The thing is they want to teach and will gladly answer your questions!! Stick around! It'll get better!!!
