Evening everyone, My daughter found this quarter a while back. I've been wondering do all Clad coins have the same color tone to it or are some colors a tad different? I ask because of this quarter, she gave me. Thanks
You guys always try to be funny. We're not all at the same level, when it comes to coin knowledge Thanks anyway
It's definitely a cool color but I don't think it's a mint error. I'm own a metal detector and this coin has nearly the same exact patina as all the clad coins I dig out of the ground. A clad coin that is truly missing its clad layer would appear less gritty and usually only have the copper color on one side. Your coin has what's referred to as environmental damage (its still worth noting and is certainly interesting but doesn't have any value above 25 cents).
It's environmental damage. This happens to copper-nickel clad coins when they're exposed to the elements. In the ground, they change color to match whatever soil they got buried in. It can range from greyish to brownish to reddish, depending on the minerals. @paddyman98 - please show the detecting pictures. Thanks. (I too have encountered hundreds if not thousands of coins that look like this while detecting, but I don't usually photograph the modern stuff I found.)
If the obverse is the same color, it's nothing. If the obverse is a regular silver color it could be something. Need a photo of the obverse.
