My wife got this in change a few days ago. In hand the coin presents as a dark grey. The obverse also has straight lines in the toning making me think this may not be toning. I have given it an acetone bath to make sure it wasn't just dirt or a foreign substance coating it. Came out of the bat just as dark as it went in. Sorry my pictures don't do it justice as to how dark the coin actually is. But you can see the lines on the obverse. So is it toning, environmental damage, or something else? Thanks...Mont
I would think toning (maybe accelerated from whatever environment it was in). Nickels can also be improperly annealed, but I don't think that is the case here. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1959-jefferson-nickel-improperly-annealed-black-beauty.250868/
