With the news that the Presidential Dollars will not be made for circulation anymore, I thought it was about time for the first coin for 2012 to come out but haven't been able to find anything on it. I saw multiple places though that the Chester A. Arthur coin was suppose to come out on 2/16/2012, but no one has rolls of it or anything. On the mints website its listed as TBA along with other 2012 presidential dollar products.

Is there something else going on with the series? Id really like to finish my collection on it. I was a little bummed out when it was first announced that I wasn't going to be able to finish my collection as it was - circulated.

Who knows what's going on at the mint. Normaly they have almost the whole year ahead scheduled by now. If you look at the upcoming product schedule there is absolutly nothing listed.

Not to worry guys. They will accommodate the collectors of these just like they do with the Kennedy halfs.

They had a monkeywrench thrown into their machinery by the political stunts pulled in december by the Crane Paper Co backed politicians who are doing everything they can to prevent the end of the $1 rag-dollar. Legislation was introduced in the House to end the rag-dollar and switch to dollar coins. A companion Sentae bill was going to be introduced and so they struck first in December and curtailed normal circulation production of dollar coins and stopped all direct sales and promotional materials. Then, when the Senate went back into session, a Senate bill was introduced.

Lobbying in favor of the end of the rag-dollar is ongoing and the independent groups who look to save taxpayer dollars are strongly in favor of this.

If you want the coins to be available again ASAP, then go to the Dollar Coin Alliance website and click on the 'get involved' link and send off a letter to your Representative and Senators.

If you do nothing, you will need to pay far above face value plus shipping to get them via "numismatic sales" from the mint. And the date of sale remains in limbo....

Because of where this series is at, I would think they are not heavily pushing this one on their production schedule. And they probably see it as "we'll get to it when we have time" project, and put it on the shelf in lieu of working on the more important mint products. They will get released eventually, but they'll decide how far up the totem pole these are on their schedule.

I call your attention to this....http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/?action=press_release&id=1322

More specifically........"Presidential and Native American $1 Coin Rolls - reduced from $39.95 to $32.95".

Now we'll be paying $8 a roll over face amount. While I'm not happy about no longer being to get them for cost, the mint does offer an alternative. Or you could go to Paul Simms.........:)

Oh brother, our good old pal Paul Simms. Just like Littleton, it's one of those vendors you just have to deal with once, and that's it! But bless Paul, he has some nice stuff regardless, just a little ambitious on his pricing.

Since they aren't being made for circulation and the mintages will be much smaller they no longer have to worry about setting issue dates and making sure they have the supply coined before they have to switch to the next one. They will probably coin them all at about the same time and put them on sale at about the same time. No more first day of issue events etc. (Because they won't have circulation rolls to sell for face value.

Well, how generous of them. I have a nice, warm feeling inside now.

We've all read about the warehouses that store billions of the dollar coins in this country. Could this all be a blessing in disguise as the mintage of the future dollar rolls will be much smaller as a previous poster mentioned that they will be made only for the collectors?

Lower mintage usually results in what? More interest in a series perhaps? Drives the cost of the coins up in some cases?

Could we see this as a positive thing for the overproduced dollar coin? Especially if down the road Congress passes a bill in let's say 5 years to stop making the dollar bill.

Then there could be a renewed interest in collecting dollar coins again. All the while you and I and everyone else on this board have been collecting when others weren't paying attention.

    Think about it....

I've been collecting the proof versions. It's not clear to me what they are going to produce for collectors. Will they make both uncirculated and proofs? As for the dollar bill, I've never had an issue with them. When I go to the bank I always get a roll or two of dollar coins and so I usually carry dollar bills and a couple of dollar coins with me.

  14. Both the 2012 Presidential dollar proof set and uncirculated set are listed as TBD on their Product Schedule page. TC

I have been snapping up the BWR of President Dollars. So far I have been able to find every Presidential Roll except Polk, Taylor and Pierce. But the hunt continues. Like the OP said I was expecting the Arthurs to be out but now its TBD. Its a cheaper hobby then gambling.

(reply to post 11 - I forgot to hit 'quote')
It is not good for dollar coins, as many more banks than now will lie to customers and say "we can't order those - they stopped making them". With normal regular production, you could still get them at some banks. Some would actually order them and others would only get them when the newest was released and then would not re-order. Now, the banks that would sit back and only get the newest issue when released when it was sent to them automatically by their cash vault will get nothing.

If they are going to pass the bills to discontiue the rag-dollar, they need to do it this year. THEN you will see a bit of an increase in interest in coin collecting.
