Anyone cast their vote for this and if so what did you choose? http://www.numismaticnews.net/article/peoples-choice-coin-of-the-year-2012
none of the above, I didn't really like any of them. for sure wouldn't buy any and I buy a lot of coins.
Seems that the award aims at promoting collector coins. None of the pieces depicted on that page is a circulation coin or circulating commem. Belarus does not even have any coins apart from such pieces for collectors. That being said, and if I was forced to vote merely based on what design I find best, I think the "coin" from Belarus would get my vote. And if the award is about "national pride", as that article suggests, who the heck suggested the German coin? Had it been up to me, the Konrad Zuse piece would have been part of the list, not that dull map ... Christian
I wasn't too impressed with coins' issued this year, this was the only coin for 2011 which i got and surprised it is not in the list.
Personally I like the "Chinese Grotto Art" one as a nice modern coin. Boy, doesn't our "art by committee" Boy Scout entry really look lame and pathetic by comparison? Have we designed a good design for a coin in this country in the last 20 years? Maybe a national park reverse, but we sure seem stuck in a "institutional, uncreative, low relief, unattractive" rut lately.
Yes, that is a cool design. I have that too -- well, what I got is the 1 litas circulating commem. http://www.lb.lt/1_lito_moneta_skirta_krepsiniui Actually I like both coins depicted in this topic better than the ones presented on that page. Keep in mind however that yours (British and Lithuanian) are from this year, while the Krause award is about coins from 2010 ... Christian
I see :yes:didn't even read the article that well if it is 2010 i really liked the Romania 100 lei Queen Marie coin. Funny story i saw that coin listed couple months ago (pic only in ebay from Romanian seller). Googled around and ran into one of your post in different forum about it and i bidded using that info you posted. It is shame the seller never sent the coin (along with few others for other buyers) wish ebay hadn't removed that listing or i had saved that picture because it was very nice.
Bummer - and I don't mean the image but that dealer. Not that this will be any consolation, but here is a (small) picture from the central bank: (press release) http://www.bnr.ro/page.aspx?prid=4637 (image) http://www.bnr.ro/EmisiuniDetails.aspx?idd=1023&WebPageId=1164 If that second link does not take you to the page with the image, click on "Coin and notes > Numismatics" first. Then (at the bottom of the "Coins and medals" section) on "Archive"; then select the entry from that list. Christian
Well, I read the responses here first. I thought they were harsh. Um, then I looked at the coins up for nomination, and I think the comments and responses here were actually too soft. I didn't see a single "coin" worthy of clicking "vote now". I can't believe the Boy Scouts commemorative is the US representative on the list...it's horrendous. I really hope that NumisMaster is to blame for their poor selections, and that world coinage designs have something to offer better than this garbage. I have a couple 2010 circulation issues I really like, so not all hope is lost...
I have found some of the designs of the modern commems interesting, most recently the medal of honor 5 dollar gold coin, I like the shield reverse of the cent, the one year portrait of Jefferson was also very good imo.
I'd be curious to hear what folks like St Gaudins, Weinman or James Earl Frasier would say about these designs. The Latvian one intrigued me. I googled the inscription on it and I get that it commerates Latvian independence but what does an image of an old woman bent over with the weight of an oversized bagel on her back have to do with it?
Errm, not quite. This page explains the design: http://www.bank.lv/en/money/declaration-of-independence Christian
I gotcha, now it makes sense. I guess I was just getting hungry waiting for our family dinner this afternoon and everything looks like food.:smile
