This was posted over in coin chat. Was wondering how many of you guys know about it and what some of our Canadian friends here thought of it. They're celebrating the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812 with an all silver proof set. Every coin is 99.99% silver. Some of them have very attractive gold plating including the 1 cent, the Loon dollar, the $2 and the commemorative dollar.

Melt value is $70 right now. 2.07 oz of silver total. I own very few Canadian coins and no proof sets but this one really grabbed me. I bought one from the mint today. I think it will go nicely with our own Star Spangled banner commems coming out this year.

20k mintage. Anybody else jump on these? Was this well known and I was just unaware up to this point? Any comments on the price? It is the first time they've ever made a set like this. I thought it was pricey but I got one anyway. I'm sure the manufacturing process is a bit more in depth with gold plating details (which I think are very attractive on these.) Although I'm sure they're making a good profit on them as well. We'll see what they do. Mine won't be for sale anyway.

I like the looks of the $59 proof dollar...are you getting that, too?

Nope. I like the one that comes in the set better. I'm content just getting that one.

Nobody!? This may be one of the nicest sets to come out in 2012. They'll be sold out soon. Some will go to ebay though.

That is a nice set but I couldn't bring myself to pay that much over current spot.

I really like the concept of a totally silver proof set, but it would have been even nicer to me if they had truly kept it all silver and not added the gold plating. It's definitely a matter of personal preference and I might have seriously considered getting it if it had not been enhanced.

I thought the plating enhanced the look of these. I dont always like it but the leaves for example really look nice standing out against the silver on the cent. It isnt like its paint. At least its gold!

Oh; I definitely think it is attractive. It's just a personal quirk of mine for some reason. I like my silver to be silver and my gold to be gold. I also don't like my mashed potatoes mixing with my vegetables on the plate. It's just a strange trait of mine.

I'm with treehugger on this one, as I prefer the all silver proof dollar. Also as opposed to this one, which lots of people like: http://www.nzmint.com/coins/news/1oz-silver-gold-gilded-taku However, the gold effects probably add more collector value to the set, in addition to the lower mintage, so more power to you! Hope it's a home run!

I like the plated version of that one too. Although I own the non-plated one. :)

I just pulled the trigger on both the set and the one dollar silver proof. Pretty stoked.

Yep, I think these will be sought after as soon as they sell out. So I sprang for the set, the UNC & the Proof Dollar :thumb:

That is certainly a lovely set and not excessively priced.

Oh yeah! I'm glad I'm not the only one that was stoked over this set. Like I said, I don't collect much Canadian stuff but I know a good thing when I see it! It's kind of hard to believe that there wouldn't be 20k collectors in Canada alone who wouldn't want this set. Like I said, I would bet it's so new a lot of people don't even know about it yet. I know the RCM puts out a lot of stuff but I think this offering stands out. It's definitely a worthy anniversary theme too. Nicely done.

I am not a fan of RCM NCLT items, especially directly from the mint. Except for a scant few, you pick can them up at coin shows 3-4 years down the road for 40-50% of issue price, sometimes less. They (RCM) have made some very nice sets, and this is one of them, but too many of their issues are just pure granny bait. The RCM has also been known to miscalculate (a polite way of saying it) what the mintage figures will be. The Canadian NCLT collector market is quite small and even a mintage of 20,000 may be twice the number of demand. Some of the RCM issues are truly works of art and others are just pure crappola .. buy them if you like them but don't count on any value appreciation. If it stays at the issue price (actual across the table sales price, not a book price), then you are way ahead of the game.

I got my set today. Just thrilled with it. Frost and deep cameo everywhere. Looks so much better in hand. The beauty and craftsmanship are outstanding. I didn't buy it for the silver (2.oz) but more for the historical aspect, the eye appeal and artistry. It's the most beautiful set I've ever seen. Love it.

Good post. I wouldn't get too excited by the 20k mintage. Remember that US coin demand is HUGELY larger than any other country. A 20k mintage on this set is actually fairly good sized. I really like the set personally, and think its a great idea for the US to do the same, I am just commenting on the mintage Vess. :)

I just received an email from RCM stating that 60% of the 20,000 silver coin sets have been sold in less than a month!
I have two pending orders with the RCM, one in process and one new.
Yes I did order one of these sets, two seperate polar bear orders, 15$ and 10$ Dragons.

You must submit your SS# on orders over $2000.
