The new finish 2011 uncirculated mint sets are available today. Whos buying? I'll be interested in seeing coins again that look more like coins are supposed to look like, no more satins. Plus, I'll have examples of the new ATB quarters that everyone else will have to wait for.:thumb:
I picked up the Proof set at a local coin show over the weekend for a couple of bucks less than what I would have paid for it at the Mint. I think I'll wait until my next coin show later this year to see if I can pick up the UNC set for a lower cost.
I have a subscription for 10 sets. Judging by how my Silver Proof subscription went, I'll get my sets some time next month!
Waited for the cleansweep of availability at noontime and I purchased the 2011 silver proof set, clad proof set, the uncirculated set, a Mary Todd Lincoln spouse medal and the two options of proof and uncirculated US Army commemoratives for the dollar and half dollar. One shipping charge. Looking forward to receiving all of these new 2011 goodies in the mail very soon.
It's been several years since most of the US coin sets were available fairly close together in time and I make a habit of grouping my orders whenever possible. I only make an exception and purchase individually when I believe a coin or set of coins will have a quick sellout. I also remember the old days when all orders were by mail, on detachable cards, paid with a check and no shipping charges. Nonetheless, a collector waited several months before the sets arrived. But that was the 1970s and 1980s.
Oh there were shipping charges, they were just built into the price of the item. So if you bought one set you paid the shipping charge in the price. If you bought two sets you paid the shipping charge twice and the mint pockets the extra profit from the second shipping charge. And so on if you ordered three, four, or five sets. if you ordered six you paid six charges but the mint had to pay out two because five was the maximum number of sets per box. Today I'm sure the Mint loses money on postage.
I picked one up. I have to say though, I really liked the satin finish. I finally thought that a clad coin was beautiful. Too bad. Now we're back to "normal". These quarter sets are going to look ridiculous in 20 years' time: Oh yeah I have the 2007 25c in normal P and D, satin P and D, silver proof and clad proof for a total of 30 quarters dated 2007! Actually... that's ridiculous right now.
Have the Clad, and Silver Sets - so I have to get the Uncirc set - Right? Probably buy it tomorrow... Lets hope I don't need to open this one to get any lint out or straighten up the coins???
I did like the satin finish when they first came out but it seems like the quality of them declined year after year. I don't know if they put less effort in how they were handled and packaged, perhaps in a cost cutting move, I don't know. Every little nick and scrape that broke the satin frost stood out like a sore thumb and resulted in an uglier coin than a regular business strike. Maybe it was just bad luck that the sets I got the last couple years were some of the worst ones, I don't know, but I'm ready for a change.
