There are 3 different areas in that coin. wish may be create another variety. The first is the forehead with so many small lines. like it's a older Rutheford. The second is the line on the jacket. It's most curve than the original design. And finally in front of the mouth there are some marks from the reeded edge of another coin; o may be from a die clash. The other dollar is there only to compare them. These are coming from a roll of NEW COINS from a bank. I still having all the rest of the 25 Ruthefords coins. Thank for your comments.
Some friends said all ready; Those are BAG MARKS. (something new for me). But possible, because the packing process give the coins the chance of some frictions between them.
You guessed it right on , when coins are minted at the mint they fall down into a huge bin of coins .this really beats and bangs them up then they are counted and put into bags. I have aeen the brinks workers throw these bags as far as they could and the bags of coins landing on the parking lot asphalt. damage on a collector coin takes away the value.
The horizontal marks on the Fore head, call more my attention. Because they look like pure, pure, pure scratches. But I remember some Morgans and Peace dollars varieties with these similar marks. And they were considered "file marks" trying to eliminate some die clash. I will save this dollar any way. Because MR. RUTHEFORD look older.
Rutherford! With an R! The man must be rolling over in his grave, what with you calling him old and misspelling his first name.
