I have been hearing things on the internet that in 2010 we are going back to the steel pennies like in 1943. Has anyone else heard these rumors. :secret:
Wow I am really impressed on how fast I get replies here, very impressive! Tell me if you hear anything with them going through with it.
I just found out that next years pennies will be 95% copper. First time since 1982 that they will be 95% copper. Pennies right now are only 2.5%, that means the 2009 pennies will be 20% heavier. Hopefully in 2010 they will make some serious changes. I wanna see a 90% silver penny available in some collector's set for the 100th anniversary next year. Now that would be nice.
Oh no there not making a silver penny I wish they were though. They are going to be 95% copper for 2009. And then in 2010 they are undecided, they could be going back to the zinc coated steel or the crappy 2.5% copper pennies, or something totally different for all I know.
Nickel cent.... hmm strange. Has the US mint ever made a penny out of nickel?? Nickel cent just doesn't sound right. F'real wouldn't that annoy you hearing people say nickel cent. Copper cent sounds better. Lol.
They might make an aluminum-steel alloy. That would be hard enough. Steel coated aluminum maybe? aluminum-steel-zinc alloy? it depends on what metal is cheaper. Steel is a LOT cheaper than copper.
Not for circulation. The law that provided for the four commemorative cents next year allows, but does not mandate, the use of the 95% copper 5% tin & zinc for cents struck for numismatic purposes. That means the copper sets would only be in. potentially, mint sets, proof sets, and any other special sets the mint decides to create for the collectors. The circulation cents will be what ever the regular composition is. If they don't make any changes between now and the end of the year they will be copper plated zinc. If they do go to steel cents they WON'T be like the ones from 1943. They will be copper plated steel not zinc plated. Copper plated aluminum is also a possibility. The steel has the advantage that it would be almost exactly the weight of the current cent. The aluminum has the advantage of being low density and about twice as many cents can be struck from the same weight of metal as steel or zinc. This makes the aluminum cents much cheaper even though aluminum costs more than steel or zinc.
Can anyone tell me what a 2010 steel (or aluminum or zinc) penny would be worth? Because I just found one. Is it one of a kind?
It's not worth anything because they do not exist. You have a cent that was plated after it left the mint. It's worth face value
