They will only be making one ounce versions..... so whatever an ounce of gold is going for plus a small premium is what the price will be. Probably, very close to what all our other one ounce gold coins are going for. I would say somewhere between $900-$1100 depending on the price of gold at the time when the mint purchases it.

We'll see if they even get as far as selling these. Notice how the AGE's and APE's are currently unavailable. When I can find gold lately it is in some off foreign stuff, like 100 Korun restrikes etc.

I understand that they will go on sale in January but I have a feeling they will be more like $1,200. They are most likely in production as we speak along with the 2009 gold and silver bullion that will also go on sale in January. The mint didn't run out of gold, they just ran out of gold bullion coins and most likely the presses have already been changed over to the 2009 dies.

The high relief will be stunning and I've already started saving for mine.

Small premium? Have you looked at the premiums they have been asking lately for proof collector gold? Expect a 40 to 50% premium over bullion.

Right now one ounce gold coins from the mint are running anywhere between $1120 to $1200. When those prices were set, gold was about the same or a bit higher then it is now. So as long as gold stays where it is, which is $855/oz today, then I can't imagine the price of this coin going over $1200... but I have been known to eat my words every now and then.

Are they making Proofs or just BUs? I'd sure like one of those in Proof to sit next to my '06 Buffalo Proof. A truely beautiful coin.

From everything I've read, they are not making them in proof, just circulation strikes. It'll be a nice coin, but you could buy a real one for far less.

Really? How much would a real one cost and how much do you think the new one is going to cost? Maybe if I mow enough lawns, walk enough dogs, and scoop enough dog crap I will buy both. :D

Well, you won't be able to buy a high relief St Gaudens for less, but a normal double eagle you can pick up for $900-1000. It's a real piece of history rather than a bullion coin, which makes it a far better deal in my opinion. I'd bet the Mint sells them for at least 1200. Don't get me wrong....it's a nice coin. But, it doesn't compare to owning the real thing.
