Hi- I have a 2009 Sac (new reverse) with what I believe is a rim error or "as minted" damage. On the edge, it says 2009 P, then 3 stars, then E Plur followed by 2 stars. The gap between Plur and the 2 stars is 1/4 of an inch and does not allow room for the full E Pluribus Unum motto. The remainder of the rim is blank, however it is scuffed and damaged. My first impression was post mint damage, but then I realized that the motto was incomplete and the stars were too close for the writing to have ever been there. It seems as though the edge device malfunctioned, causing a skip in the impression. What is this coin classified as? Error? Damage? I was actually looking for a plain edge. Sorry for no picture, but the edge of a coin is presently beyond my photographic abilities. I will try to capture it and repost if I can. Thanks- Mike
What you describe is a known error type. It is due to slippage as the coin passes through the Schuler Edge Lettering machine. It sometimes happens as a result of a damaged edge before the coin passes through the lettering machine. Nice Find.
Thanks for the reply! I'll have to do some research on this now. I had heard of plain edge and edge doubling, but this is new to me and I appreciate your help. Have a great day- Mike
