I just got back from ANACS my Polk Dollar coin with slipped edge lettering it graded ms 67. Has anyone else seen this error and how does one price such an error.

What exactly do you mean by," slipped edge lettering"?

Hate to say it, but I think the MS67 is going to do a lot for the premium obviously but I don't think the error will do much at all. I have found maybe 3 or 4 dozen of them with the "slipped" edge lettering, leaving some elements too close and others too far... In fact, I quit collecting them because I got so disgusted with the overall lack of quality on the strike of the edge lettering.... Who knows though, you might find someone wanting the high grade who also collects errors, but I would be surprised if you got more than a 5% premium... Just my opinion though... :)

The coin has lettering that runs into other letters leaving a larger blank space between words or date.

OK, thanx. I've never heard of that before, I don't collect the pres. dollars...

My coin has slipped to the point where one star is between the 9 and the P mint mark. I have seen other coins with slipped lettering but not to the extent of the one I kept.

Well, the worst I had the one star was nearly touching the mint mark leaving a gap maybe twice to three times normal on the other end of the run... But then I began looking for more and I saw more and more similarly minted, along with hundreds of others with out of place incused letters to different degrees, as well as so many weakly struck edge inscriptions that I just decided that it ultimately would be so common that they would be worth keeping... Pretty cool that you got an MS67 example though... Obviously a nice addition to any collection, but I just don't see that particular error adding a tremendous premium...

Hope I am wrong though, if you are planning on selling..

Yes I plan on selling.....any offers???.....LOL. They may very well be a common error I agree, but why am I not seeing them for sale anywhere? I've been looking to find a fair price but cannot find any comparisons. I do see a lot of sloppy minting seeing all the "errors" you are seeing. Even if it has no premium the fun is in the hunt!

Don't get me wrong... It is definitely a keeper, even for the error... I wasn't belittling your find by any means... Just over the time I have been searching coins, there are certain varieties and errors that I just don't look at anymore because I am more annoyed by the lack of quality in the minting process than anything... For instance, I don't even look at cents dated 1988 to 1991 anymore because there are just sooooo many weak strikes and weird PMD coins... Even the best quality from those years are poor excuses for coins imo... The pres dollars, I kinda feel the same way... I went through hundreds of dollars a week for awhile and began to realize that I was getting a lot of the types of errors you describe... Initially, I kept them, but then began to get frustrated with the weakly struck edge-lettering, and the 'anomaly' letters showing up on the edges, and like you I was having difficulty even finding info on them, because people seemingly had begun to write them off as too common and not very interesting...

I agree 100% though, that the joy is in the hunt for keepers...

    pic

this is the only pic I have before I had it slabbed you can clearly see a star between the 9 and the p mint mark. The shifting creates a large blank space between letters.

    market?

Does anyone have a suggestion on fair pricing this coin? I can't find a comparable anywhere. The coin shops I show it to say it's an interesting error, that they have never seen it before and had no idea on "fair" pricing. Hoping to avoid the Ebay thing.

Does it have " Slipped Edge Lettering " on the slab?
