Why are these hoarded? Are they rare? I don't keep them.

They are a commemorative lincoln editions small premium but eventually the value will stack up, keepers for me.

    Thanks,

They made, like, a gazillion so it beats me. The proofs were made with 95% copper and the cents in the uncirculated set were as well. The business strikes were zincolns.

The mintages are a little lower than other years in the same era. They are part of a type collection with their distinct reverses. Not rare, but will carry a slight premium in the future.

They may very well be your generation's bicentennial quarters/halves, and just like the aforementioned, the chances of the average-kept, even straight from rolls examples being worth anything in your lifetime is, unfortunately, slim to none. A huge percentage of the original mintages are still, and will continue to be, in their as-minted conditions, and means supply will far, far, far outstrip any level of future demand. In a nutshell, they're a loser (generally speaking, of course).

I get kids thinking about coins by offering them $5 if they can find a 2009 nickel or dime in change. So far, no one's collected...but they keep looking!
