I just received a nickel roll 2009-P that I bought off of ebay I also ordered some 2x2's that haven't come yet. Can't keep myself from staring at the roll and want to crack it open. I don't have a plastic tube to keep them in so, I would have to put them back in a bank roll. Do you think I should wait or just fulfill my curiosity and open it. I don't want to turn a 70 coin into a 69 or lower. Thank's for your help.
So far I am not seeing any graded up above a MS66 (not full steps) and I don't think that with the rolls that were sent and opened to look for these that people are finding 70s and just holding on to them. I can believe a lot of people are not opening their rolls. I would definitely wait until you got some two by twos and could at least put ones you think are over a MS65 in those. MS65 only valued pretty low right now, between maybe 1 and 6 dollars for each of that grade. Maybe that is an indication that MS65 might be a fairly common high grade where MS66 is much more difficult to get to. I don't know because I can't just correspond this to what has been graded or what people are paying right now. Modern issues tend to not be valued straight from beginning until later. Sometimes the best time to get into a modern new issue that has some scarcity for whatever reason is actually the first few months, until people realize it's not as scarce as first thought or not quite as special a value, and the values drop.
I went through thousands of 2009 P business strikes. I got as many as I wanted from Puerto Rico in 2009. They have so many scratches you don't have to worry.
Thank you, guys. I just went on the pcgs site, "Should have done this before I posted" and discovered that the finest graded for this date is a 66FS. Nothing wrong with hoping. I have a lot of FS in my 38-17set.
When I was actively searching Mint bags & rolls, the thing I found odd is that I got a bunch of Sac dollars, Kennedy halves and State quarters that I had certified in MS67 & MS68. You'd think these would be subjected to a greater degree of damage just because of their size. Chris
Just received my roll of 2009-p nickels. Here are the results. 6 for the junk tube, spotty, cloudy, or overall ugly. 32 uncs but scratches or dents. choice of 2 to complete my 38-17 set. I will sell the rest on ebay for $3 inc postage.
