First lets remember that we're dealing with the US Mint here. Phila and Denver are making the cents, and West Point as far as we know. If West Point is being used they will most likely use either P or D dies. This has been done before. San Francisco will produce all the proof 'S' mint coins.

The Kentucky cent production has ended, the Indiana cent production is due to be released next week. Production will then convert, read die change, to the next in the series.

How many of each of the 4 designs will end up being produced is anybody's guess. Production is driven by orders for coin from the
    Federal Reserve system.

I'm sure others will chime in with corrections and expansions.

I agree with Penny Guy, but also believe this first design will be a collectible since very few are making it into circulation, especially the first day roll releases. I am really looking forward to seeing these pennies in the new designs, the drawings are very detailed and beautiful. I think they will definitely boost the penny collecting market, like the state quarter did.

First series is gonezo my friend. Fine, Kaput, no more....once they stop producing them that's it.

The cent production schedule and release dates are not related. The release dates are set in advance for ceremonial purposes. Production runs on a different schedule. They could have already started producing the 3rd cent by now.

You can get monthly mintage figures for cent production at both mints for 2009 but what they don't tell you is which dies are being used.

    thanks

Thanks everyone for the info .... really helped my learning curve... sound like this could be a very collectable item...I agree in my area (rural upper midwest)plenty of penny coins in circulation most banks have enough so don't order from the Fed...most larger banks here got one box and went fast I did get about 8 rolls of D's but hope to try and get rolls of all four releases..

    thanks again

Its hard to tell the collectibility of these 4 cents until next year when we get the mintage figures.

They are most collectible now because there are lots of people that want them but can't get them. This hysteria will surely increase as the next 3 issues get back logged in the distribution system. Once the distribution is cleared and the flood gates open ..these will become common, so if you are a profiteer ..strike now ..while the demand far outpaces the supply.

You can watch the Mint sales for rolls if you don't mind paying a premium. Check out http://www.usmint.gov/

The mint has scheduled the release of the 2009 US Mint Proof Set to be on June 1, 2009 in about 3 weeks. Will it just have the Cabin Proof?

We can expect to see all 4 cents in proof sets. Remember the designs are finalized so San Franscisco has been producing them just for the proof sets.

I've also been wondering if the proofs will be 95% copper.

I wish the US Mint site was more informative. It's a good thing we have a place like CT to find out what is going on!

Yes they are supposed to be the original bronze composition

I know when you would buy the proof and mint sets, they contained all of the state quarters even though some of the quarters had not been released, in bulk, to that point. As stated they are suppose to be the copper/bronze composition

The mint and proof sets will be smoking this year. Order early and maybe you can get them by Christmas.

Actually that information IS available on the US Mint website.

"The United States Mint also will issue numismatic versions of the four redesigned pennies with exactly the same metallic content as the 1909 coin (95 percent copper, five percent tin and zinc). These coins will be minted in proof and uncirculated condition, and will be included in the United States Mint's annual product offerings."

The pressroom is a treasure trove of information.
