Notice: No more edge lettering on the 2009 Presidential Dollars,And a 4 coin variety for the Lincoln cent witch will be released on Lincolns B-day Feb-12-2009 from the U.S. Mint the lincoln penny will be 100 years old in 2009 ! :thumb:
Hmm, I thought that only the religious motto is to be moved away from the edge ... That would mean the year and mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM, continue to be there, right? Christian
Plus 13 stars. That's so they don't have broad blank areas that could cause slipping during the lettering of the edges.
Besides the presidents, what do you think will be the price of a proof set of four Lincolns? Cause I'm going to get at least one of each. I mean the pres. and the cents. zghya:
I think the new cent will be a big hit among collectors and non-collectors alike. I had also heard there will be a special collector's edition penny set made of the original composition of 95% copper. Anyone else hear this? If it is true, I hope the mint's cutbacks on products do not affect their decision on making these.
As I have pointed out in the past, the reason for that is the much higher mintages that we produce. The other countries can send their cons through the edging device at a much slower pace with extra pressure giving the machine time to form the letters up fully. We spit ours through at a rate of 17 coins per second to keep up with production. It takes a certai amount of time for metal to move and be formed. In order to keep up the production rate we have had to allow less and less time which is why the relief on our coins has been getting shallower and shallower. There isn't enough time during the strike for the metal to flow into deeper recesses in the dies. So we make te relief shallower so it desn't have to flow as far.
Man, 17 pieces/sec, thats is faster than we could make transistor chips in 1965. Anyway that dissapoints me about quantity ruling over quality. What ever happened to the motto" ZERO DEFECTS"? When I was working eons ago, zero defects and quality ruled or else you had some deep explaining to do. Blah, blah, blah, I guess. zg
Right. The mint in Berlin (DE) for example makes its coins at an average rate of only 14 pieces per second. But basically it's true - in the euro area we have more than a dozen minting facilities. If there were only two or three, output per location would have to be higher ... Christian
