Right off the bat I noticed the dark color, (almost black), next, the larger than average diameter and lastly, the double rim. It weighs 2.5 grams.

Any ideas on what this error is and is it rare?

    Tia!

It is damaged. I know it can be done by heating the coin, may be other ways to do it as well.

Actually.. It's the opposite. Unplated. Copper plating removed.

Ok, so how does it weigh 2.5 then? Unless it was 3.11 originally and the copper removed weighed .61. Seems a little odd.

2009 D cents are made of copper plated zinc and weigh 2.5 grams (+/- .13 grams) and the copper plating weighs about .05 grams. So even removing the copper plating the chances of it weighing 2.5 grams is pretty good, especially if your scale is only accurate to one decimal place.
