Ok. I am trying to learn, so I wanted to run this one past you guys. I was going through my first box of quarters and this caught my eye. My first thought was that it was a repunched mint mark. So I started staring at it and thought it was doubled. Then realized that I need to read up on the minting process because I don't really understand what's possible and what's not. In the meantime, I started looking through the boards here, and have seen similar photos, so now I think it is just die deterioration? I know that there is no error listed for this quarter. So I am getting ready to throw it back, but want to check that I am right. Thanks in advance for your help.
Are you sure it isn't just an artifact of your lighting? Try rotating the coin with the mintmark as the central point and take some more photos. Chris
From my coins to hopefully help differentiate: Machine doubling quarter die deterioration doubling dime 1995 DDO cent
Hmm. Thanks again Seattlite. Your photos ALWAYS help. I think I understood that they weren't doubled. I thought it was an RPM. Still think it looks just like the RPM in my book. Does anyone have a go-to article about RPMs and how that occurs? Also, thanks to everyone for taking the time to look at the photos. I appreciate the education.
It can't be a re-punched mintmark (RPM) because the mint stopped punching the mintmark into the die by hand about 1990. Chris
Error Ref is a great resource but if it isn't what you're looking for, I have more. I have an entire folder for "varieties" one for "errors" and one for "research" so if you want to learn about something, just put @Seattlite86 when you ask the question and I can probably find it for you quickly. http://www.error-ref.com/repunched-mintmark/
