I read that the 2008 US Proof Set sells for well-over $100. I'd like to know if they mean the clad proof set or the silver proof set. Why has this set risen in value over the others? Does this price also include the State Quarters?
A quick check of completed ebay sales of 14 coin sets show $43 to about $70. The clad seems to be going for more then the silver.
Might also be higher because it was the last year of the Lincoln Memorial cent and tha last year for state quarters. IMHO!
From what I have read on this forum, the increased price may reflect the fact that the Mint removed it from sale earlier than usual which caught some people by surprise. I am not sure that this is a supply/demand issue but more likely has to do with the psychology of collecting.
I buy 2008 silver sets (14 coins...although I could do without the PrezHeads) on eBay when I can get them for under $50 (including S&H). I've never seen them sell for over $75. I'm drawn to the 2008 silver set for two (2) basic reasons... 1) The low mintage of the dime and half dollar. 2) The artistry of the 2008 quarters. My personal opinion is that 2008 has the best designs of the series. I'm particularly fond of the Arizona and Oklahoma designs. I bought one (1) clad set to crack open for album coins, but that's all I'll buy...why buy clad when you can have silver?
The 2008 silver Kennedy halves are shown in the 2010 Guide Book with a mintage of 620,684 ... but I haven't confirmed that with elaine1970:bow:. Anyway ... that would be the lowest-mintage proof Kennedy ever, as far as I can tell. For that matter, the 2008 Mint Sets look pretty good too ... the 2008-PD Kennedys in there are the lowest mintage since the 1938-D Walking Liberty half dollar (although most of the former were probably saved, the latter certainly not). The Guide Book totals of 1.7 million coins each (P&D) include both the "collector rolls/business strike" Kennedys and the special Satin Finish coins made in the Mint Sets, again to my knowledge. If anybody has any different/better information, I'm all ears! :secret:
I don't have my Redbook with me, but I believe the 620,684 number is an "interim" figure (don't know why they publish numbers they know aren't right). The actual figure is closer to 750,000...still pretty low, though.
Yeah, that low mintage 2008 mint set with the unique satin finish coins, which are simliar to matte proofs, has some real "sleepers" in it.
