I know someone made a thread about this, but I can not find it. What is going on with the 2008 Sac dollars?
Well the series won't end.... It -will- be back in 2009 But for this year........ This has the potential to really muck things up.... it could delay proof and mint sets... I understood that they stuck them....but that the mint is worried that there is no law authorizing them to sell them as collectibles. Worst case is they sell them to the Treasury and they show up in circulation and the mint pulls the medallion trick in the proof and mint sets. I just wanted to know if the Mint had been successful in getting an amendment.
I am surprised more is not made of this, if this is not resolved it could delay all the mint and proof sets this year. This has the makings of a 1964 Peace Dollar or 1933 Double Eagle type of coin... What if no amendments come.... Coins destroyed? the possibilities are endless here.
Congress Keeps Sacagewa Coins Rolling for Collectors Coin collectors can rest easy. President Bush on Friday signed into law a bill that will continue the minting of $1 Sacagawea coins in 2008, but only for numismatic purposes. No more will be produced for general circulation until next year. Full Story >>
OK, so, I'm definately no expert here. What exactly does this mean? Does it mean that the 2008 Sac. will only be available in Unc. and Proof sets? No rolls or bags will be sold by the Mint and none will be released to the banks? And is that P, D, and S mints? Thanks in advance. David.
It appears to be that way. The uncirc and proof sets will definitely have them. They may also/even be available in rolls and bags. Should be like any other year for collectors. I have not seen the Sac dollars in circulation since Y2K!
If that is the case, will there be two types, the "satin finish" for collector sets, and a "circulation" type, for bags and rolls? If so, the "circulation" types should be a low production coin, compared to most, if production is not tied to the Presidential dollars.
It appears that we may see circulated Sacs again this year. The new bill authorizes clause (i) of section 5112(n)(1)(B) of title 31, United States Code to continue to be in effect. Section 5112(n)(1)(B) of title 31, United States Code reads: (B) Continuity provisions.— (i) In general.— Notwithstanding subparagraph (A), the Secretary shall continue to mint and issue $1 coins which bear any design in effect before the issuance of coins as required under this subsection (including the so-called "Sacagawea-design" $1 coins). (ii) Circulation quantity.— Beginning January 1, 2007, and ending upon the termination of the program under paragraph (8), the Secretary annually shall mint and issue such "Sacagawea-design" $1 coins for circulation in quantities of no less than 1/3 of the total $1 coins minted and issued under this subsection."
Oops! The mint got what they asked for, and got put right back into the bad position they hoped the redesigned Sac law would get them out of. They delayed stiking the 2007 Sacs because they were hoping the redesign law would make it so they didn't have to strike that huge number of Sacs that no one wanted (1/3 the number of President dollar.) Now they've ben saddled with it again on the 2008 Sac dollars.
Anyone know an update as to when we might expect to see these be released? And subsequently the complete proof and mint sets?
From Littletons newsletter 2008 Sacagawea Dollars Authorized For Collectors Only Production of a limited quantity of 2008 Sacagawea dollars has now been authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Bush, after a law enacted last year failed to allow production of any 2008 issues. Though the U.S. Mint has not struck Sacagawea dollars for circulation since 2001, a limited quantity of the coins has been produced each year since then for collectors. However, a 2007 law calling for renewed circulation of Sacagawea dollars beginning in 2009, with annually changing reverse designs, omitted authorization to continue striking the existing coins in 2008. When the error was acknowledged, the U.S. Mint assisted Congress in passing a technical amendment to resolve the matter. The amendment allows the minting of Sacagawea dollars in 2008 for numismatic purposes only. No coins will be released for circulation until next year. Thank you for your patience while a legislative solution was reached. Littleton Coin Company is hoping to be able to accept orders for the 2008 Sacagawea dollars in late April, and we will provide another update as soon as the U.S. Mint publishes a release date for the coins.
The only way these coins will get out there is if the dollar is discontinued. If that happens I would probably just use 2 dollar bills. I sometimes get them in the register I work at and customers want regular dollars if I try to give it to them. I was way out of the loop no idea they were extending the quarters and dollar coins till I went to the mint website. Wish they had an indian on the back though like the indian cent.
