Hawaii wanted to put king Kam ma yada yada yada on theirs, but as we all know kings are a no go on US coinage. The Arizona quarter is the best yet and I can not wait until they come out. I have really been hoping that my state would have just the Grand Canyon and no maps or other nonsense, and yes my hopes were fulfilled (breathes a sigh of relief). any thought on the designs? they are good by me. http://www.quarterdesigns.com/index.html you can see them here
I don't pay that much attention to design but is it certain that one of the "finalists" will make the actual coin? Also, I don't see why Hawaii can't put a king on theirs. Sure the country is anti-king but who cares, the guy is dead and that's not really fair to him (that was somewhat sarcastic, I don't care that much). In addition to being king he was other things, he deserves a place on the coin if that's what Hawaii wants.
I see Oklahoma has a peace pipe on theirs.. That explains why when I go there everyone is smiling and talking jibberish.
Alaska I liked the Alaska finalist, but I especially liked the one with the sled dogs. I own a Siberian Husky so I'm A bit partial. Arizona also had some nice designs, the landscape designs my favorites. The whole page of quarter designs really shows how the artwork has improved through the series imo.
I really like Arizona's design with the larger Sequaro cactus (the one on the far right) and I also like Alaska's design with the bear and "Land of the Midnight Sun". New Mexico's design is a little weak (another state outline). I like the Pioneer Woman on all of Oklahoma's designs (especially the one in the lower left corner) and I like the "surfer" design the best on Hawaii's. All-in-all, I would say we have some pretty good designs coming next year!
the winners are: AZ the grand canyon OK the bird one AK polar bear NM one of those stupid state seal ones HI no winner, the mint will design one for them as they were unable to submit an acceptable entry.
2008 State quarters I think Utah and Oklahoma designs are excellent. One of the best yet. In fact all of the 2008 coins are also very good. BWJR
The design of the King Kamehameha I statue outside the Iolani Palace in Honolulu would be a very attractive & appropriate design for the State Quarter commemorating Hawaii. If you have been to Honolulu, you would recognise the statue. Here's an article about King Kamehameha I of Hawaii; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamehameha_I . Aidan.
We are not to keen on putting kings on our coins over here in the "colonies". As a matter of fact the very thought of it makes me want to puke. (but that is just me)
Check out this entry for the Arizona one http://www.quarterdesigns.com/proposed/arizona/katiebeamonte.jpg And Hawaii shoulda picked the Hula dancer.
Isabella Quarter. Danr,America has already had a monarch on a coin - the extremely rare 1893 Isabella Quarter, which depicts Queen Isabella I of Spain.I see nothing wrong with depicting the statue of King Kamehameha I on a coin commemorating Hawaii,as if it hadn't been for that King, there wouldn't even be a Hawaii. Aidan.
The Oklahoma state bird is the Scissor Tail Flycatcher, incase anybody is wondering, although I like your responses, the bird one, the bird design. Why not an oil or gas well or something with Roy Rodgers, or depicting something about the Trail of Tears, jmt's John
