    Hello!
My name is Timothy Trout and I live in Atlanta, GA. I am no coin collector and certainly not an expert in these matters, but I did a little research on this unique coin I found last week and I think it might have some considerable value to the appropriate buyer.

    It is a:
    John Quincy Adams presidential Dollar
It was clipped during minting removing Approx. 10-15%
The clipping removed " . E PL" from the side printing, the top portion of "ADAMS" on the obverse side, and a small corner from the bottom of Lady Liberty's dress on the reverse side
    weight: approx. 7.5 grams
Its real distinguishing factor is this - The side printing reads:
    "URIBUS UNUM . IN WE TRUST . 2008 P"
The word "GOD" did not print at all on the coin edge as it was directly opposite the clipping error which removed " . E PL". The "W" in "WE" is very lightly pressed to the point of being difficult to read.

Included are some images I took with a macro lens to see what its true value might be. Any information you could give me would be much appreciated. Either way I think I'm starting a new hobby :)
    Thanks for your time,
    -Tim Trout

I appreciate the well thought out answer to my question. . . maybe someone who doesn't want to let their mood affect their judgement will answer with something actually helpful.

I don't think so. An amateur would not know to remove the lettering from the opposite side of the coin.

I estimate it at $50-$100 or so. You might find bidders on eBay willing to pay more though.

Thanks cave troll! I actually picked the coin up when a woman paid me at a garage sale all in dollar coins from a bank envelope. I've looked up a few reputable buyer/sellers in the area, so I'll probably get it checked out this week by a few different people. I'm just trying to get as many opinions as possible. :)

    Value?

So I emailed a BUNCH of people and took the coin to an NGC certified dealer and these were my results so far.

I emailed Fred Weinberg & Co with the photos and he estimated its value at probably "
    a few hundred dollars retail"

A local company(i got off the NGC website) I contacted simply replied:
"I am sorry but this coin is not for us." no greeting or signature on the email
I'm not sure, but I do live in the bible belt and I don't think they liked the fact that I emphasized "god" having been left off the coin. . .

The other NCG certified dealer I contacted here in Atlanta looked over the coin for a few minutes, consulted his computer and some books then told me they would offer $160, but he said that was based primarily on the 6% planchet clipping(by weight) and that the "god" error wasn't really much of a value increaser. He mentioned having sold a 31% clipped planchet John Adams dollar for upwards of $2000.

Well, more than half of the emails I sent out haven't even received a response yet, but either way, I feel that this coin is worth a lot more to me than $160 as it is in fact so unique beyond just the clipping error and has started me into coin collecting. It is my first real find, so I may just end up holding onto it for a few years and see where it goes.:kewl:

Consider that the dealer would resell it and would make a profit (that's what he's in business to do). So, I would agree with you that it is worth more than $160 retail. Congrats!!!

    and I would agree 100%.
Fred is the man, and I would suggest that if you wish to sell it that you sell it to him as he will treat you fair!
Also, I would suggest getting this slabbed by either PCGS or NGC - if you are an ANA member, or ebay member then you can send it to NGC without having to join and pay the membership fee. Whatever you do DON'T TOUCH THE FACES OF THE COIN WITH YOUR FINGERS, and put it away where you won't be tempted to handle it.
