I thought it might be interesting to hear how other Forum members manage their programs. Thus, I invite the answers to two questions: What collection goals did you have for 2008, and how successful were you in reaching them? What collection goals have you set or 2009? For example, in 2008 I filled out basic basic year set of Silver Maple Leafs and Silver Eagles. For 2009 I hope to do the same with Morgans, though I will have to drop below MS quality for the final additions (no surprise!).
I don't have year goals. I have a running wantlist. As items are acquired, they disappear from my wantlist but are replaced with new items of interest. Unfortunately some things are more easily gotten than others. My current wantlist is now loaded with the tougher-to-find items. Not necessarily expensive, just not encountered as often. Did I complete anything? Yes. - Got a 1943/2-P Jeffereson which completed my War Nickel set. - I wanted one US 1790-something coin just to say I have one. Got it. A 1798 Second Hair one cent in XF. It's the least expensive variety. - I wanted one Dahlonega and one Charlotte coin, again just to say I have them. Got a half Eagle from each mint in XF. - I wanted some keys/semi-keys, more for investment purposes than as collectables. I picked the IHCs and got a 1877, 1908-S and 1909-S. Most of the other items I got filled in holes or upgraded ongoing projects.
2008 got me back into collecting and this board has been largely responsible for digging up the coin knowledge that I had stored in the recesses of my brain, like riding a bicycle, eh? In 09 I am going to keep buying the cheaper stuff that I like to play with and stay away from the higher dollar SLQs until I get an idea of what the market is doing.
Not really any goals involved with my collecting. Just having fun and enjoying the hobby. I suppose if I had a goal, it would be to complete a collection of every circulation strike in US coinage. That'll never happen unless I win a few lotteries...and even then it would depend on extrordinary luck. It's more of a dream. Guy~
I don't set goals as most of what I need is simply not available at any given time. I just try to pick them up as I am able.
Same here, no goals, just a want list, sometimes I even buy stuff not on it. I worked on semi key barbers this year purchasing a 95-S in VF and some minor keys including an 09-O in MS, cleaned. I finished my type set of half cents and picked up a pair of MS 1883 nickels, that weren't even on my list. In 09 I hope to finish those barbers, buy some more bust halves and get a classic head 2.5 and 5 gold coins for my gold type set.
Yeah I have my goals for next year. I want a MS63 NGC basic 4 coin multi-slab nickel type set and a fugio cent. And for 2008 I got my first morgan dollar and some other things.
This year I started my coronet head large cent collection, gathering up six. In 2009, I hope to expand my collection funding it through my summer job! I also hope to complete some of my folders of nickels. 2009 will be a great year!
I didn't have any 2008 goals, and I achieved every one of them. I mainly just make sure I get the ASEs and w mint ASEs every year and then keep my eyes open for something I like.
I had a few goals/ambitions for "08. I wanted to attend more shows and made it to a few. I wanted to meet a fellow cointalk member and had the pleasure of doing that. :thumb: I also wanted to add some Morgans to the collection and added a half dozen or so. I added a 7/8 tailfeather, a o/cc and a hotlips. Those were some of my more exiting purchaces. Next year I hope to add a gold dollar, a few more Morgans and some better date three cent nickels. And I hope to meet some more CT members. That would be the highlight.
I set goals for business....but not coins. Alot depends on the market, and what is up for sale. I would have loved to have completed my PF Franklin collection last year but I didn't find coins that made me say WOW. Speedy
