I know this is a goofy question, but what happened this year with Whitman? In 40 years of obtaining Red Books, I've never gotten one before July 1, but the new 2007 is already out, just bought it yesterday.
I've mentioned this stupidity many times. I've contacted Whitman Publishing as to how can you call this editioin a 2007 when 2006 has barely started? They answered that they have always issued the editions like this. I too have never been able to acquire an edition prior to at least July. As to all the errors in the 2006 edition, I also sent numberous messages to Whitman about them. I once posted a copy of one of those messages on this forum. Whitman sent me a copy of "Morgan Silver Dollars" in as a thonk you. However, back to your original statement. A 2007 Red Book is completely useless being out almost a year ahead of time. This edition has been out for over a month now and this is 2006. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.
Yeh it's about a month and a hlaf earlier this year than last year. I've already found an error with the new one though, PAGE 128- NO PRICES FOR 1919-D BUFFALO NICKEL.
The 2008 edition will probably be out in a couple of weeks... But seriously, this is just a marketing gimmick based on the likelihood that people shopping in bookstores are more likely to pick up a 2007 edition put out in May 2006 than a 2006 edition put out in July 2006. The entire hobby is riddled with deception and this is just another example.
I think Charlie is right, there was far to many errors in the 2006 red book. that is why they put the 2007 red book out early.Bad thing is there is no way they will be right with the price of the coins at todays market value. Red book has always been wrong ,with the value of coins both gold and silver. Good reference book bad price guide, they should have waited to release the new book.
Are the pice guides in some of the monthly mags more accuarate??? Are those Grey sheets or whatever color more accurate??? Does someone else (reputable) make a simmilar book???
As noted previously, I sent Whitman Publishing a numerous paged letter listing all the errors in the 2006 edition. I've started a compiling of errors in the 2007 Edition which I will send them soon with a suggestion they issue a 2007 1/2 or 2007A edition. This is nuts to have anything with a date almost a year in advance. Maybe ment as a joke but Whitman Publishing should really maybe consider issuing a 2008 soon or maybe a 2009 edition. It is bad enough cars come out in late Fall for the following year, but a coin book? What good are the prices if a year old already. I suggest if all the members of this forum sent emails to Whitman about their dissatisefaction of a 2007 edition a year early, it may do some good.
The grey sheet is dealer prices and I believe the CoinValues gives coin prices accurate to some extent. I don't think coins would have a fixed value, it would be a range.
I've always considered the Red Book to be more of a reference than a price guide, and judged is that, it's excellent. You can't count on the prices to hold for an entire year, but they are at least a decent ballpark figure, and tend to be at least relatively correct... they at least clearly show which coins are relatively valuable and which ones aren't... a highly valuable coin tends to remain valuable, and one of low value tends to remain low. It might not show precisely how much a given coin is worth now, but it shows very clearly how its value compares to others. May get the 2007 edition anyway... at least it updates and corrects the 2006. I don't use it to judge the current absolute value of a coin anyway and don't mind that it isn't useful as a price guide.
I think the redbook is only good as a historical reference of the general value of coins from years past. I often use the old ones I have purchased new and purchased used to help predict whether certain coins have or might experience an upward trend in price in certain grades. For this the redbook can really help you out...minus the errors that is.
No. Of all the published price guides it is the best of the bunch. But that's not really saying much since none of the others are even close. It should also be noted that it is a wholesale price guide and not a retail guide. It should also be noted that it is not accurate on all coins. Yes, there are several that publish price guides in book form - but they are not accurate either. Use the links you find - HERE - at least you will have a pretty good idea for the value of almost any coin. And it won't cost you anything
I'm looking for prices on Franklin MS64 FBL, Does anybody have a recent grey sheet with them that can help me out? Thank you
I don't mean to change the subject-but seeing the 2007 Red Book here reminded me of my SAEs-In the first few pages of the 2007 there's an offer for two free NGC first strike SAEs from Universal Coin-first time customers only. I did it and got mine just like they said except I got three!
I saw the ad and called too. It was a hard tpye of sale -you tell them your calling about the 2 free ASE's & they do give you them . But the guy on the phone tried to pressure me into buying four 2006 platinum sets at like 3300$ each or something crazy like that. I almost hung up in the middle of the pitch. He sensed I was getting ****ed & sent me on my way. Pretty good deal though, 2 ASE's for $10 to cover the shipping cost.
I've seen several deals like this... companies that will offer proof sets or American Eagles at or below cost to attract new customers. I took someone up on that offer once, and every single day I got one or two pieces of mail from them begging me to buy other stuff, lol. Still, got a nearly perfect 1999 ASE out of it for the cost of shipping, can't complain. Almost sent it in for grading... couldn't find a mark on it anywhere... but later ended up selling it for money to buy other coins. Had a few ASE's at a time but now just kept the one proof one I got for my birthday this year. It's a nice coin, but I only need one of them, would rather use the money to buy a wider variety of coins.
Thanks cherrypicker. I missed that page. Not clear how to order that free stuff except to call the toll free number I guess.
