Hello all. Can u folks tell me what might have happened to this one? The R in "in God we trust" has a nice blob of metal filling in where there should be a hole. Thank you.
The "plugged R" was caused when the post (column) of metal on the die which formed the center of the letter broke off and enabled planchet metal to flow into the void. This is a common occurrence for most denominations. While it may make the coin an interesting conversation piece, it does not make it worth much of a premium. Chris
Thank you so much! That is an excellent answer. While it would be nice to have "collector value" I have never sold one of my coins. It will join the collection for sure now that I know it is mint error and I have an explanation to study up on and feed back when the visitors come to my gallery (that means when I force my daughter to sit and listen about dad's boring hobby!, hehe). TY
I can't tell if it is the result of a die chip, or an impact on the side of the R that has pushed metal to the right and covered the hole. The pictures are not clear enough and too much glare on the area.
I know. Sorry. I cannot seem to get them clear. Under the magnifying glass it's very clearly a 'blob' in the center that is a part of the coin, and it came that way. I'll work on it.
