question for my Commonwealth friends: i just bought my first Britannia silver, and i'm quite pleased with it. i'm concerned about the packaging, though. is the plastic bubble surrounding the coin non-pvc plastic, and suitable for long-term storage? or am i better off moving the coin to a saf-flip or similar? i'd rather not have to handle it, and i like the design of the paperboard sleeve, but i'm only familiar with us mint-type airtites. would appreciate your input. regards, V.
They are beautiful - Great choice. Here are a couple of mine which I store in a plastic rounds w/black plastic rings. They fit the coins perfectly. I also have a couple of similar coins (Panda, Maple Leaf) in the plastic bubble and they appear to have no ill effects from storage.
Vercingetorix, can you please post some photos of your silver Britannia? They go right down to a 20 Pence denomination. Aidan.
I have kept a 2003 britannia in the original packaging and the coin has kept perfectly fine for 4 years (in a box with a pounch of silica dessicant)... I work in a polymer lab and if very enthusiastic one day I could find out if the packaging is PVC or not (although on first sight its seems not to be PVC)
While I primarily collect American coins, I'm enjoying some of the bullion coins put out by other countries. The Britannias are my favorites, with the Canadian Silver Wolves and the Australian Lunar Coins right behind.
I ordered a 2007 Britannia back in October, 2007 and received in this week's mail. The Royal Mint sent me a postcard about a month ago saying it was backordered, but it has finally arrived. It is absolutely beautiful! I don't like the packaging that it's in; the reverse is exposed. I'll probably place it in an Airtite soon just to keep it fresh. The quality is stunning. There's not a mark or imperfection anywhere on the coin whatsoever. I'm at an Internet Cafe right now, but I'll post a picture of it when I return home. I think the Britannias are some of the most beautiful modern coins produced (but, the U.S. Silver Eagle is still my favorite)...
