Is it common (or rare?) for the edge lettering to be upside down If you were looking at the presidents face on any $1 coin and turned it to the side? Here are 5 coins Top 3 are upside down the bottom 2 coins are right side up..all the coins are heads up. Thanks! Shrek
Not only is it common....it is how they are made. There is no attention paid to the direction a coin is fed into the edge lettering machine so in theory half will be one way and half will be the other way. The exception is proof coins where a segmented collar is used to add the lettering to the coins as the coins are struck. Proof coins are supposed to be oriented with the lettering up in relation to the side with the President. Thanks, Bill
There is no "Upside Down". More like "random" is the direction assigned to orientation. Except Proofs.
thanks for your responses, Sounds like if the gov't didnt pay any attention to how the edging was done on these coins make me think they were doing things kinda half a**. Have a great weekend...well what's left of it -Shrek
