I really don't see any notch. Sometimes strike doubling can look that way. It all depends on the direction of the back and forth movement of the hammer die as it is withdrawing. A much better close-up would be needed to be sure. Regarding the "die crack" in Lincoln's head, I can't be sure if it is a die crack or not. There would have to be raised metal where the planchet flowed into the void made by the crack. The two marks on the reverse at the base of the Memorial and on the column look like each may have been caused by a strikethrough. They are very common on Lincoln cents. Chris
i checked the TY with my hand held microscope that goes 100x magnfication. unfortunatley i am not able to get better photos with my usb microscope. any confirmation on a possible laminaton behind his head? for the sake of conversation. if it is a dd with either a die crack or lamination or both would be something worth slabbing?
Given the condition of the coin, it has obviously seen circulation, and I'm inclined to believe that the mark in the field to the left of Lincoln is PMD. Take a good hard look at the bottom edge of the mark. It looks like metal has been pushed up along the edge (crater effect) as you would normally see from a gouge on the coin. You wouldn't see this if it was anything else. No, the coin is not worth slabbing even if it was a lamination defect, die crack, strikethrough, etc., etc., etc. Chris
